You Have a New Whiteboard. What Next?

Buying a new whiteboard is just the beginning of turning your office into an engaging and communicative space. Once you’ve bought the whiteboard, and had it mounted on the wall, what do you do next? This article is going to look at what the next steps are.

Step 1 – buy some accessories

Once the whiteboard is ready to go, you’re going to need to buy some accessories, otherwise you won’t be able to use it. It sounds like a simple step but sometimes it can be difficult to know exactly what accessories you’re going to need. A pen is the obvious – and basic – choice but can you be confident that’s all you need?
Buying pens in a variety of different colours is a great start to prevent the whiteboard space looking dull. As well pens, you’re going to need some essential cleaning tools as well. An eraser as well as some cleaning products are normally a good choice. Wet wipes and a cleaning spray are perfect for your ‘starter kit’. Although you may prefer to buy each item individually and create your own starter kit, it may be simpler to buy a ready-made kit that can get things going as soon as possible.

Step 2 – set some ground rules

Although it’s easy to assume that the whiteboard is to be used responsibly, depending on the office environment you’re working in, it may be worth just laying some ground rules as to what is and isn’t appropriate. Although this can be important, it’s vital that this is done in such a way that doesn’t discourage the use of the whiteboard.
It may be that you have a particular way you want the accessories to be kept, or that you want the whiteboard to be used for strictly work-related communications, whatever the rules, make sure that everyone is aware of them.

Step 3 – encourage usage

Even if you have set down some ground rules, don’t be shy in actively encouraging your employees to use it. You don’t want to have spent the money in getting it set up only to find that it goes dormant and unused in the office.
There are some great ways you can encourage your employees to use the whiteboard. In fact, we’ve written a blog post to help you do just that. Take a read for some inspiring ways to make your whiteboard more interesting and encourage engagement.

Step 4 – enjoy it

Once you’ve got the whiteboard set up, and you’ve got all the accessories you need, it’s time to enjoy it. Encouraging your employees to use the whiteboard in a fun and engaging way will not only boost morale but also help with team building and will create a better overall atmosphere in the office.
Following these four steps will ensure your new whiteboard is being used and enjoyed by everyone in the office. It’s clear that purchasing the whiteboard is just the first step and there are in fact a few more things to do in order to really make the most of it.
